Waltham 23j Vanguard Premier railroad pocket watch

Fabulous16 size railroad watch made by Waltham Watch Co. in 1938.
 
This is the final edition of the model 1908 bridge plate movement that incorporated all of the latest improvements to the model. Including the very latest white metal temperature and magnetism resistant white metal alloy hairspring and associated solid mono-metal balance wheel. This hairspring was a vast improvement over the earlier carbon steel springs that suffered from changes to their elasticity with changing ambient temperatures. These changes resulted in varying time keeping accuracy, to combat which required split bi-metal balance wheels and extensive adjustments.
This edition of the 1908 is known as the "Premier" and Waltham claimed it is the best watch they have ever made. This particular watch is a 23 jewel Vanguard grade and features a fully capped Swiss lever escapement with double roller, diamond end stones in gold settings, the afore- mentioned hairspring and balance wheel, and with the jewell bearings pressed directly into the movement plates. It is running extremely well and keeping very good time.
The watch is crown wind and lever set (withdraw the small lever by the 11 and rotate the crown to set the time) both functions operate smoothly.
The original gold filled case is fully signed "Waltham premier" and is of 3 parts with screw on/off covers front and back. Both remove/replace easily and both close down square and tight all round. The case is in lovely condition with  no dents or dings and no evident wear beyond light surface scratching commensurate with normal usage. A very nice case.
The correct white enameled dial is in first class condition, I can find no flaws but please study the photos. A very clean set of blued steel spade style hands under a good acrylic crystal.
 
Overall a super railroader in well above average condition ideal for daily use or to complement that collection.
