Waltham 23 jewel Vanguard, model 1892.

Lovely full spec Railroad watch made by Waltham in 1903.
The 18 size full plate movement is a model 1892 which was the final 18 size made by Waltham. A vast improvement over what had gone before as the 1892 introduced the straight line Swiss lever escapement which was more accurate than the previously used right angled English lever escapement. This one is the top grade Vanguard with 23 jewels, fully capped Swiss lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallets, gold timing screws and the patented "Church 1892" micro-regulator. The movement also has the Waltham patented "Safety spring barrel" which in this case is also jewelled. Beautifully finished with a lovely damascened patterning and gold jewel settings. This movement represents the peak of the watchmakers art for the period.
This watch is running strong in all positions for the full length of the wind, and is keeping spectacularly good time within a couple of seconds per day.
The watch is crown wind and lever set (withdraw the small lever by the 2 and rotate the crown to set the time).
The case is made from "Ore Silver" which is in fact a marketing ploy, the material is an alloy comprised mainly of Nickel and contains very little, if any silver. However, this is probably the most durable of all case materials as it is extremely hard wearing and very resistant to dents and / or dings, and any scratches can very easily be polished out.
This is a 3 piece case with screw on / off covers with both doing so easily, and both closing down square and tight. The case is in lovely condition!
The original double sunk dial is in fair condition with a couple of fine hairlines evident along with some staining around the perimeters of the sunken portions. (Please study the photos)
A good set of blued steel fine spade hands under a mineral glass crystal that has a small edge chip at the six.
Overall a super example of this high grade watch in very useable condition.
