Waltham 17j "Appleton Tracey" Coin Silver Hunter
Heavy 18 size coin silver full hunter made by Waltham Watch Co. in 1893.
The 18s full plate nickel movement is a model 1883 and is the top grade "Appleton Tracey" with 17 jewels. The model 1883 was the last of the old style movements with a right angled English lever escapement. These were replaced with the more modern straight line Swiss lever escapement in the subsequent model 1892.
This watch is in fine fettle having just been fully serviced and with a new mainspring fitted. It has good strong amplitude in all positions and is keeping good time within 1 minute per day, good for a watch that is 130 years old. It is crown wind and lever set (withdraw the small lever by the 5 and rotate the crown to set the time) both functions working smoothly.
The coin silver case is not original to the watch which is not unusual for watches of this age. It is however period correct and is in nice condition all round. The lift spring is fairly weak so the front cover needs lifting manually but remains at 90 degrees vertical when opened. The inner dust cover does not snap shut, being obstructed by the balance bridge which is quite high. The outer rear cover does however snap shut and stay shut, so the inner cover failings are not a problem. The hinges are in good order and the outer covers operate as they should with no excess play evident. The case is in generally good condition all round with just normal age related wear.
The original double sunk white enamel dial is in lovely condition with no evident chips, cracks or hairlines. A good set of blued steel hands under a good acrylic crystal.
Overall a nice example of this high grade antique watch in very useable condition.
