Very rare Elgin 21 jewel "Father Time" wind indicator Railroad watch
aapws are very proud to be able to offer for sale this exceedingly rare Railroad watch from Elgin.
The very high quality movement was made in 1919 and has 21 jewels with screw set, gold jewel settings, sapphire pallets, gold timing screws, a travelling nut style micro-regulator that was exclusive to elgin, and full timekeeping adjustment in 5 positions. This example has the highly desireable wind indicator or power reserve indicator. The movement is in perfect mechanical condition, running strong, keeping excellent time, and the wind indicator working as it should. The watch also benefits from having a brand new mainspring fitted during it's recent service.
This watch is crown wind and lever set (remove front cover and withdraw the small lever adjacent to the 1 to set the time).
The 12K gold filled case is in lovely condition with no dents, dings or wear through to brass although the raised design on the edge of the rear cover is showing smoothing due to age and use. The front and rear are screw on/off with both doing so easily and closing down square and tight. All of the gold is bright and lustrous, a beautiful case.
The white enamel dial is in very good condition, there are a couple of very small chips on the edge at the 7 and 11 and a faint hairline by the 1. The chips cannot be seen with the front cover in place and the hairline is virtually unnoyiceable to the naked eye.
The watch has a complete set of original hands that are all in good order and a good mineral crystal.
A very rare find today and in super condition!
care of your antique watch
These antique watches are remarkably robust and reliable under normal useage but have no inbuilt shock protection so will not resist a hard knock such as being dropped. They are not waterproof so will not like being submerged, and they can be susceptible to becoming magnetised if left by some electrical appliances.
If these points are remembered then the watch will continue to give excellent service for another 100 years.
