Stunning Hamilton 992B
A simply stunning railroad watch made by Hamilton Watch Co. in 1965.
The 992B is probably the defining railroad watch. Whilst all of the American manufacturers made Railroad grade watches it is the 992B that stands out as being possibly the finest watch ever made by an American manufacturer. Production started in 1941 and continued unaltered until 1969 when the last 992B was made and the factory closed.
The movement is a 16 size nickel plate with 21 jewels, a fully capped Swiss Lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallets and gold timing screws. The 992b employs the "Elinvar" white metal hairspring and associated solid balance wheel. This hairspring is resistant to temperature variation and also is anti-magnetic, and is a vast improvement over earlier carbon steel hairsprings and their associated split bi-metallic balance wheels.
This particular movement has just been fully serviced (see photos) and a new mainspring has been fitted. It runs strong in all positions and is keeping super good time within a couple of seconds per day. The watch is stem wind and lever set (withdraw the small lever by the 1 and rotate the crown to set the time, again see photos) The watch winds and sets smoothly.
The original stainless steel case is in as new condition, I can say no more.
Similarly the white enamelled dial which is a Montgomery style and the black enamelled hands, all perfect! The watch is fitted with a good clear acrylic crystal.
Overall a very collectible railroad watch in fabulous condition that could be used daily. This must be one of the finest available.
