Stunning 16s Waltham 21j "Riverside Maximus" Full Hunter
A really handsome full hunter made by A.W.W.Co. (Waltham) in 1900. What we now know as Waltham Watch Co. went through several name changes before settling upon Waltham. At the time this was made the company was known as American Waltham Watch Co. hence A W W Co.
The bridge plate nickel movement here is a model 1899 and the very top grade "Riverside Maximus". This is the less common 21 jewel version in a rare Full Hunter configuration. This superb movement features 21 jewels with a fully capped Swiss Lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallet stones, Gold timing screws, and a patent "Church 1892" micro-regulator. The movement also has the Waltham patented "Safety" spring barrel, and Gold(alloy) train wheels with a steel escape wheel. Beautifully finished with the distinctive R/Side Max damascened patterning and black enamelled inlaid script, it also has gold jewel settings. A beautiful mechanical marvel!
This particular watch is in first class order both mechanically and cosmetically. The entire movement is bright and shiny, it's running really well and is keeping time to within a few seconds per day (over 3 full days it has gained less than 1 minute).
The watch is crown wind and crown set (Click out the winding crown and rotate to set the time). Both functions work smoothly.
This top grade movement is housed in a stunning, highly decorated gold filled full hunter case that is in lovely condition. It has hinged front and rear covers with a separately hinged inner dust cover. The main cover hinges are in perfect condition and the covers open and close beautifully. The inner cover hinge is very slightly loose which allows some small side to side play for the cover. The hinge is intact and the cover is secure but there is evident wear in this component. All of the covers do snap down square and tight. The lift spring is fine, depressing the crown allows the front to pop open, and it is held firm at about 90 degrees. (Press the crown when closing the cover to prevent undue wear, don't just snap it shut).
The original fully signed A W W Co. dial is in fair condition. Double sunk white enamel dial has an evident chip in the central portion adjacent to the sub seconds dial (please see photos). These period correct original dials are very hard to find so it would not be easy to find a replacement in better condition. However, this is the only flaw that I can find as otherwise the dial is in lovely condition.
A very good set of blued steel spade style hands under a very good mineral glass crystal.
Overall a very rare watch in lovely condition and working perfectly.
