Sterling Silver 18s Waltham 23j Vanguard model 1892. Superb!
Beautiful, heavy sterling silver cased Waltham 23j Vanguard railroad grade pocket watch made in 1900.
The model 1892 was the last, and best full plate 18 size movement made by Waltham Watch Co. A top specification movement this one has 23 jewels, a fully capped Swiss Lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallets, fully jewelled spring barrel, gold timing screws and a micro-regulator. The movement is beautifully finished with a lovely damaskened pattern, gilt inlaid script and gold jewel settings. The watch is crown wind and lever set.
The watch runs strong in all positions and keeps excellent time, winding and setting functions both working smoothly.
The solid Sterling Silver case is in fine condition. This is a "Swing Out" case where the movement is mounted onto an internal brass ring that in turn is hinged to the main body of the case below the 12. It has just one removable cover, the front which screws on / off. To expose the movement, remove the front cover, ensure the hands are pointing away from the 6, click out the stem (as if going to time set on a conventional watch) then using the thumb piece indentation below the 6 the movement can be swung up and away from the main case body.
This case is in lovely condition showing just minor age related wear.
The double sunk white enamel dial has no flaws that I can detect. Similarly the blued steel hands are in beautiful condition under a very good heavy mineral glass crystal.
Overall a beautiful antique railroad watch in lovely condition and working well.
