Splendid Elgin 23 jewel B W Raymond railroad watch
A rather splendid vintage railroad watch made by Elgin Watch Co. in 1941.
A very high quality grade 540 movement that has 23 jewels and is one of only 10,000 ever made. The movement specification includes a fully capped Swiss lever escapement featuring a white metal alloy hairspring that counters the problems inherent in a carbon steel spring due to changes in temperature. Ambient temperature changes cause changes in the elasticity of earlier springs which caused variations in timekeeping accuracy and reliability unless countered. These counter measures were both expensive to make and very time consuming to adjust. The new hairsprings solved these difficulties and allowed for much more reliable timekeeping. The movement also has a fully jewelled "Motor" barrel.
It is running strong in all positions for the full length of the wind and is keeping really good time.
The watch is crown wind and lever set.
The movement is housed in it's original 3 piece gold filled case that is fully signed within the rear cover. It has screw on / off covers front and back with both doing so easily. The case is in very fine condition with no dents, a couple of minor dings to the rear cover, and no apparent loss of gold.
Period correct white enamel dial is in lovely condition with no detectable flaws.
A very good set of blued steel heavy spade style hands under a good acrylic crystal.
Overall a super example of this premium grade pocket watch in very useable condition.
