Rare Tremont / Melrose 18s Coin Silver pocket watch.
Rare pocket watch made by Melrose Watch Co. in 1868, one of only 3000 ever made by this company.
The Tremont watch Co. was founded in 1864 and in 1866 moved from Boston to Melrose changing the name in the process. A total of 3000 watches were made by the new company using much of the materiel left from the Tremont company, hence the Tremont signed dial and the Melrose signed movement, this was quite usual at the time.
The full plate 18 size movement has 11 jewels, with an English lever escapement.
This watch is running remarkably well considering it's age and is keeping astonishingly good time within a few seconds per day. It is key wind (open the rear cover and place the key in the hole in the dust cover) and key set (open the front cover and place the key over the square on the end of the post to which the hands are attached). All is working well and as intended.
Heavy coins silver open face case with hinged front / rear covers and an additional hinged internal dust cover. All of the hinges are good and all covers work as intended (Press down on the crown to release the rear).
The case is in super good overall condition with no dents or dings. The blank cartouche on the rear cover has worn smooth due to age and use.
Original white enamel dial correctly signed Tremont Watch Co. and it's in super condition.
A good set of fine spade style hands under a good mineral crystal.
Overall a very rare find in exceptional useable condition.
