Lovely Hamilton 992B railroader. Stainless case
Railroad grade pocket watch made by Hamilton Watch Co. in 1947.
Hamilton 992B movement with 21 jewels, fully capped Swiss lever escapement, double roller, Sapphire pallets, gold timing screws, "Elinvar" white metal alloy hairspring and solid mono-metal balance wheel. This movement shows the peak of watch making development for the time, all of which is still current today. The "Elinvar" hairspring was the answer to the problems caused by temperature variations. Changes in ambient temperature affected the structure and elasticity of the earlier carbon steel hairsprings which would cause the watch to run fast or slow. Expensive to make bi-metallic balance wheels were used to counter these problems but reliable timekeeping was still difficult to achieve. Elinvar solved this and as a bonus was also found to be somewhat anti-magnetic.
This particular watch has just been serviced so is mechanically sound, running reliably for the full length of the wind and keeping excellent time in all positions. It is crown wind and lever set (remove front cover and withdraw the small lever by the 1, rotate the crown to set the time). Both functions work smoothly.Housed in an original 3 piece stainless steel case with screw on / off front and rear covers. Both covers operate smoothly but the rear needs finesse to avoid cross threading. The case is in fine condition throughout.
Double sunk white melamine dial is in good order with just a couple of very faint hairlines evident. The central signature has somewhat faded, please see the photos.
Time indicated by a very good set of black enamelled hands under a new acrylic crystal.Overall a super collectible and highly useable railroad watch in fine condition.
