Hamilton 992B railroad watch. Lovely!

Hamilton 992B railroad watch. Lovely!

A fabulous railroad watch made by Hamilton watch Co. in 1946.

The 16s nickel plate movement is a model 5, grade 992B and one of the finest watches made by any American watch maker. The watch features state of the art technology for the day and was in continuous production from 1941 until the factory closed in 1969.

The movement has 21 jewels, a fully capped Swiss lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallets, gold timing screws and a sprung micro-regulator. This watch also has the "Elinvar" temperature resistant and anti-magnetic white metal hairspring and associated solid mono-metal balance wheel. This hairspring was a major advance on what had gone before as variations in ambient temperature had a significant effect on the time keeping qualities of earlier watches which required expensive and complicated adjustments to overcome. The Elinvar hairspring provided far more reliable timekeeping.

The movement is housed in a 10K gold filled 3 piece case which is in very good order throughout. There are no dents, dings or heavy abrasion, all of the gold appears intact with the pendant, crown and bow also in good order. This is a "Bar over Crown" style case that has screw on/off covers with both doing so easily and both closing down square and tight.

White enamel single sunk dial in super condition as are the black enamelled steel hands and also the acrylic crystal.

Overall a super railroad watch in lovely condition, good for a daily user.
