Hamilton 992B railroad watch in stainless steel case

Hamilton 992B railroad watch in stainless steel case

A fine 16 size railroad pocket watch made by Hamilton Watch Co. this is a late model as it was made in 1963.

The 992B is probably the quintessential railroad watch as it incorporates all of the state of the art horological developments and improvements made up until that time. In continuous unaltered production from it's launch in 1941 until 1969 when the factory closed it's doors for the last time. Renowned for it's reliability and astonishing accuracy the watch is highly prized amongst collectors and this is a really nice example.

The nickel plate movement features a fully capped Swiss Lever Escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallet stones, gold timing screws, and a sprung micro-regulator. Also featured is the innovative "Elinvar" white metal alloy hairspring and associated mono-metal balance wheel. This is a huge improvement over the carbon steel hairsprings used earlier which were susceptible to timing variations due to changes in ambient temperatures. To combat this, split bi-metal balance wheels were used which required precise set up and adjustment. The "Elinvar" spring overcame this problem and was also found to be anti-magnetic, another problem that was becoming of concern due to the increasing  use of electrical appliances.

This particular watch  is running strong for the full length of the wind whilst keeping time within a couple of seconds per day. The watch is crown wind and lever set (withdraw the small lever by the 1 and rotate the crown to set the time) both functions working smoothly.

Housed in a fully signed Hamilton Stainless Steel  3 piece case that is in nice order with no dents, dings or major abrasion. The screw on/off covers both do so easily and both close down square and tight. I would suggest that the bow is a later replacement for the original. Please study the photos to judge the condition of this very nice case.

A beautiful white enamel "Box Car" style dial in almost new condition, It looks perfect to me but please study the photos. I have used this dial as a replacement for the original melamine dial that has some significant hairlines so it, again is not original.

The time indicated by a good set of  black enameled hands, and all are under a very good acrylic crystal.

Overall a highly collectible railroad watch in super condition and working as intended.
