Hamilton 992B, 21 jewel railroad pocket watch. Superb.
A lovely railroad grade pocket watch made by Hamilton Watch Co in 1943.
The grade, or model 992B is probably the best known of the Hamilton range of pocket watches as it has the very well deserved reputation of being one of the finest pocket watches ever made by any American manufacturer. Renowned for it's rugged reliability and accuracy the 992B remained in continuous production from 1941 until the factory closed in 1969. It incorporated all of advances made in horology and was unchanged during it's production lifetime.
A nickel plate movement with 21 jewels the 992B features a fully capped Swiss Lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallets, gold timing screws, and a sprung micro-regulator. It has the very latest, and innovative white metal alloy "Elinvar" hairspring and associated solid mono-metal balance wheel. This hairspring solves the problem of timekeeping variations due to ambient temperature changes that had been experienced with earlier blue carbon steel hairsprings.
This particular watch is running nicely and keeps excellent time within a few seconds per day. It is crown wind and lever set (withdraw the small lever by the 1 and rotate the crown to set the time), both functions work smoothly. The 10K gold filled 3 piece case is a Hamilton model 11 so original to the watch. It's in lovely condition with no dents, dings or abrasion beyond very light surface scuffing due to normal usage. The screw on/off covers both do so easily and both close down square and tight all round.
Double sunk white enamel dial in lovely condition, I can't find any flaws (Please study the photos).
A good set of steel hands indicate the time under a good acrylic crystal.
Overall a super fine railroad watch in lovely condition and working well.
