Hamilton 992 Railroad Watch
16 size Railroad grade watch made by Hamilton Watch Co. in 1905.
This is an early example of Hamilton's venerable 992 railroad standard pocket watch. The very high quality movement has nickel plates with 21 jewels, a fully capped Swiss lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallets, gold timing screws and a "Reed" micro-regulator. Beautifully finished with a gold(alloy) centre wheel, gold jewel settings, a lovely damascened pattern, and gilt inlaid script. The watch is in lovely condition, running strong in all positions and keeping excellent time.
The watch is crown wind and lever set (withdraw the small lever by the 1 and rotate the crown to set the time). Both functions work smoothly.
Very nice 20 year gold filled case is probably original to the watch as the engraved pattern has considerably worn smooth. However I can find no dents, dings, or heavy abrasion marks and the gold still appears largely intact as there is no evident wear through. Having said that, all of the gold on the bow has long gone no doubt worn away by a chain hook. The pendant and crown are good.
The original double sunk white enamel Montgomery dial is in excellent shape (please see photos), as are the blued steel hands and the acrylic crystal.
Overall a super useable railroad watch in lovely condition..It's 120 years old!
