Good 18 size antique Elgin pocket watch. Silveroid case.
A nice antique pocket watch made by Elgin Watch Co. in 1900.
The Nickel full plate movement is a model 5, grade 208 with 7 jewels and a Swiss Lever escapement.
A rugged and reliable movement that is running strong and keeping very good time. The watch is stem wind and stem set with both functions working well.
The movement is housed in a hefty "Silveroid" nickel / silver alloy case and engraved within the rear cover it proudly proclaims that this is "Genuine imitation Silver". None of your namby pamby imitation "Imitation Silver", this is the genuine article. 19th century marketing, what!
However, this is a genuinely strong material which has proven resilient over the years. This one is in lovely condition with no noticeable dents, dings or abrasion. It has screw on / off, front / rear covers and both operate as they should, nice case.
Original sigle sunk white enamel dial is in good condition, as are the blued steel spade style hands. The watch is fitted with an early thick mineral glass crystal that does have quite a few surface scratches which become noticeable in certain light conditions. I leave this to the new owner to either keep it to retain originality or change it for another glass (if you can find one), or a modern acrylic.
Overall a very nice original work a day watch in fine running condition.
