Elgin 16s coin silver hunter, 15j convertible, early railroad. Lovely!

Elgin 16s coin silver hunter, 15j convertible, early railroad. Lovely!

An early Railroad grade watch from Elgin Watch Co. made in 1887.

The 16 size movement is a grade 50, model 1 and is a fairly rare convertible model. The convertible relates to the orientation of the watch in that a hunter movement winds at the 3, whilst open face winds at the 12. These movements were made such that the orientation could be converted easily to wind at the 3 or the 12 without the need to produce separate and different hunter or open face movements.

This is a beautiful movement with 15 jewels, a Swiss lever escapement and a "Moseley" micro-regulator. The watch is in lovely mechanical and cosmetic condition, running strong in all positions and keeping excellent time. The watch is stem wind and lever set both functions work smoothly.

The heavy coin silver case (0.80%) by Deuber is period correct so probably original to the watch. It's in lovely condition with engine turned covers and a highly stylised engraved main band. There is little apparent wear as the finishing is still crisp and sharp. Gold hinges in perfect order with all covers operating as designed. A lovely silver case.

Original single sunk white enamel dial in beautiful condition, I can find no flaws. Non railroad approved "Moon" style hands in good order under a good acrylic crystal.

Overall a beautiful and rare Hunter watch in lovely condition that is working as it should.
