Antique 18 size Illinois 11 jewel model 3
Elleven jewel Illinois with a fifth pinion. Grade 2 model 3 full plate.
This is a fairly scarce and unusual watch in that it has an additional free standing pinion within the gear train. Almost all other watches only have 4 in the train. The second hand rides on this extra pinion rather than on the more usual 4th wheel pinion. There are 11 jewels in the watch, including a fully jewelled escapement. This watch was made in 1883 when manufacturers were changing over from key wind to crown wind. This watch is crown, or stem wind, but also retains the winding square for winding with a key although there is no hole in the cuvette to accomodate a key. The watch is also lever set (open the front cover and withdraw the small lever adjacent to the 2 to set the time).
The watch is in excellent mechanical condition and benefits from a new mainspring which was fitted during the recent service. It runs strong and keeps very good time.
The case is a very fine 14K gold filled hinged front and rear with a hinged internal dust cover.
There are no dents, dings or wear through to brass, and the pendant, crown and bow are also in excellent condition. The main body of the case has an engine turned finish which is crisp and sharp whilst the bezel and outer edge of the rear have an engraved design. There is also a blank cartouche to th erear surrounded by an engraved floral pattern. This is a nice case.
The white enamel dial is in fair condition as it has a small edge chip by the 10 and a couple of very fine hairlines. Otherwise all is good with dial with nice sharp printing. A good set of blued steel hand under a good mineral crystal.
Overall a genuine antique, and unusual watch that is in excellent working order.
