23j Hampden "Special Railway" Sterling Silver case.
Lovely 23 jewel railroad watch made by Hampden Watch Co. in 1903. This has been re-cased into a beautiful Sterling Silver case, but I know not when.
This is the top grade 18 size movement with 23 jewels a lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallet stones, gold timing screws, and patent micro-regulator. The movement has a jeweled mainspring barrel, and screw set gold jewel settings. This is the top spec "2 tone" finished movement with a lovely gilt and nickel damascened finish.
The watch is running with good amplitude in all positions for the full extent of the wind whilst keeping really good time within a few seconds per day. It is crown wind and lever set (withdraw the small lever by the 2 and rotate the crown to set the time) both functions are working smoothly.
Re-cased at some point in it's life into this beautiful Sterling Silver 3 piece case which has screw on/off covers front and rear. Both covers remove/replace easily and both close down square and tight. The case is in lovely condition with the floral engravings to the rear still clear although time and use has worn them down. No significant dents or dings, just a couple of age related scuffs. The pendant, crown and bow all in good order. A very handsome case.
The original double sunk white enamel dial is in beautiful condition, please study the photos. A very good set of blued steel, spade style hands under a new acrylic crystal.
Overall a high grade railroader in lovely condition and working as intended.
