23 jewel Hamilton 950B railroad watch. Just serviced.
A fabulous top grade railroad watch made by Hamilton Watch Co. in 1951.
The Hamilton 950B is probably the best of the best, it is the top grade railroad approved pocket watch made by Hamilton. It has 23 jewels, a fully capped Swiss lever escapement with double roller, gold timing screws, sprung micro-regulator and incorporates the innovative "Elinvar" white metal alloy hairspring with associated mono-metal balance wheel. The watch also has a jeweled spring barrel arbor and gold jewel settings. This is all state of the art when the watch was made and hasn't really been improved upon since then.
This particular watch has just had a complete overhaul including a full strip service, a new mainspring and the replacement of a couple of previously damaged parts. The movement is mechanically sound, runs strong in all positions and keeps time within + a few seconds per day. It is crown wind and lever set (Withdraw the small lever by the 1 and rotate the crown to set the time) both functions working smoothly. Cosmetically it is in good condition despite some small residual staining on both winding wheels. (Please see the photos).
The model A case is in super fine condition I can find no flaws beyond superficial light surface scratching. The screw on/off covers both do so easily and both close down square and tight all around. Excellent case!
The original dial is an off white melamine type and is in excellent almost new condition. This is the rare 23jewel Railway Special version. At some point in it's life the original baton style hands have been changed for these spade style though the original sub seconds hand remains, curious! The hands though are all in good order and reside under a brand new acrylic crystal.
Overall a super collectible railroader in fine condition and working well.
