18s Waltham model 1857 coin silver hunter
An early Waltham full hunter made in 1876.
This is an 18 size model 1857 "P S Bartlett" with 11 jewels, and a right angled "English lever escapement". The model 1857 is the very first truly mass produced machine made watch ever made anywhere. Prior to this watches had been made mainly by hand such that near enough every watch was "bespoke". The American Watch Co, who subsequently evolved into Waltham Watch Co. were the pioneers of mass production by machine.
This watch is key wind, and key set and a key is included with the watch. To set the time it is necessary to prise open the bezel, place the key on the square centre to which the hands are mounted and then turn the key to move the hands. The watch winds and sets easily, and it is running well keeping good time.
The heavy coin silver case is in good order with all of the hinges in excellent condition, the lift spring is working although a firm press of the cover release button is needed to release the cover.
The bezel containing the crystal is a very tight snap fit and requires a blunt knife to open it in order to set the time.
Original and correct white enamelled dial in lovely condition with just a small (poorly repaired) chip at the 11. All of the printing is crisp and sharp. Original blued steel hands in good order.
Overall a very useable antique watch in lovely condition and running well.
