18s Waltham 21j "Crescent St." model 1892 Railroad Watch. Super!

Nice antique railroad watch made by Waltham Watch Co. in 1901.

The nickel 18 size movement is a model 1892, "Crescent St." grade with 21 jewels. The 1892 was the final development of 18 size movements by Waltham and is far superior to those that had gone before as it features a straight line Swiss lever escapement and the patent "Safety" spring barrel. The Swiss lever escapement is more reliable, and more accurate than the earlier right angle English lever escapements previously used, and the "Safety" barrel avoided the collateral damage that often occurred when a mainspring broke.

So this 21 jewel movement has the Swiss lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallets, gold timing screws, and the "Church 1892" micro-regulator. The watch also has the aforementioned patented "Safety" barrel.  It is perfectly finished with beautiful damascened patterning and gold jewel settings.

It is mechanically sound as it runs perfectly in all positions for the full length of the wind and is keeping remarkably good time to better than + 20 secs per day. The watch is stem wind and lever set (withdraw the small lever by the 2 and rotate the crown to set the time.

The case is a 2 piece swing out type made from Nickel / Silver alloy. This type of case is probably the strongest and most protective ever made. The material is super hard so very resistant to knocks and bangs, it is also quite heavy gauge so any scratches can easily be polished out. Additionally as it has only the one removable cover it is quite resistant to the ingress of foreign matter which could potentially foul the movement. The movement itself is secured to an internal solid ring that is itself hinged to the main body below the 12. To expose the movement, remove the front cover then click out the stem (as if going to time set on a conventional watch) finding the indent below the 6 it is now possible to swing the movement up and out of the main body. (Be sure to point the hands away from the 6 to avoid stabbing yourself should your thumb slip, ouch!)

The case is in super condition throughout.

The dial is a painted metal piece that is in excellent condition for it's type. These dials can be prone to excessive staining but this one is pretty good. (please study the photos).

A very good set of blued steel spade style hands under a very good acrylic crystal.

Overall a nice useable example of this collectors piece in lovely condition.
