18s Waltham 17 jewel model 1892 "Canadian Pacific"
Waltham model 1892 made specifically for Canadian Pacific railroads.
The 1892 was the final 18 size full plate movement made by Waltham and is certainly the finest watch of this size that they produced. This 17 jewel variant is to full railroad spec and features screw set gold jewel settings, a double roller, Breguet overcoil hairspring, "Ohlsen" sprung micro-regulator, and adjustment for timekeeping in 5 positions. One of only 2600 especially produced for CanPac it carries the distinctive Beaver Canadian Pacific Logo as can be seen in the photos. The movement is in excellent condition running strong and keeping very good time, and like all railroad watches this is pendant wound and lever set.
The heavy Nickel alloy swing out case is in super fine condition. These cases are extremely durable as they are constructed from a heavier gauge material than was used for most pocket watch cases. The material is also very hard wearing and resistant to scratching. Having just the one removable cover also slowed down the ingress of dirt particles carried in the air. As the movement is attached to a solid ring, that in turn is attached via a hinge to the main body of the case, this also provided additional shock protection to the movement. These features in total added up to the most robust and protective case one could buy, and were consequently very popular amongst railroad employees.
The double sunk white enamel dial is to Canadian spec and correct for the watch but does have a noticeable repair around the 14-15-16 of the central sub dial. In real life it is hardly noticeable but it is fairly obvious in the enlarged photos.
Good blued steel spade style hands and a very good mineral glass crystal.
Overall a very rare and highly collectable railroad watch in excellent condition.
