18s Hamilton 940 railroad watch. Beautiful!
Beautiful antique railroad watch made by Hamilton Watch Co. in 1904
The Hamilton 940 is a beautiful full spec railroad grade full plate movement with 21 jewels, a fully capped Swiss lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallets, Gold timing screws and a "Goldthwaite" micro-regulator. The movement is beautifully finished with gold jewel settings, a lovely damascened pattern and gilt inlaid script.
This one is in fine fettle as it runs with strong amplitude in all positions and is keeping really good time. The watch is crown wind and lever set (Remove front cover and withdraw the small lever by the 2, rotating the crown sets the time) both functions work smoothly.
The 20 year gold filled case is in fair condition but does show signs of age and use. The locomotive engraving to the rear cover is considerably worn smooth and there is an extensive area of wear through at the bottom of the main band. Despite this it is still a handsome case and has no dents or dings. The pendant, crown and bow are all in nice order. It has screw on / off covers front and rear and both do so easily, and both close down square and tight.
Unusual privately signed, double sunk white enamel dial with striking red outer minute markers. The dial is in lovely condition with no detectable flaws when in the hand. There are a couple of imperfections visble in the high res photos but these cannot be seen with the naked eye.
A very good ste of blued steel hands under a good acrylic crystal.
Overall a lovely antique railroader in good condition, could be used daily, and very collectible.
