18 size Waltham 17 jewel P S Bartlett. unusual dial.

18 size Waltham 17 jewel P S Bartlett. unusual dial.

An unusual pocket watch for the time as it has a hunter movement within an open face case but with a conversion dial that allows for correct orientation with the 12 below the stem, but the sub-seconds dial has moved to the 3. This was made by Waltham Watch Co. in 1904.

The full plate nickel movement is a model 1883 with 17 jewels and P S Bartlett grade, and was the last model made with the right angled English Lever escapement. This one is running sweetly in all positions and is keeping remarkably good time.
The watch is stem wind and lever set (Withdraw the small lever by the 2 and rotate the crown to set the time) both functions working smoothly.

The 3 piece case is plated base metal, I assume this is nickel plating as I don't believe Chrome was available back when, but I stand to be corrected if someone knows better. The case is in overall good condition with no major dents or dings although the plating is beginning to wear thin around the bezel. Perhaps surprisingly the locomotive design engraved to the rear is in fabulous nick being still crisp, sharp, and clear. Screw on/off front and rear covers both do so easily and both close square and tight. I would guess that the brass crown is a replacement as I can find no trace of plating on it, the bow is in great condition. Overall I think it's an attractive case that has withstood the test of time.

The painted metal dial is a fairly scarce specimen and in relatively good order. There are no chips, cracks or obvious hairlines but the original off white finish is quite well stained. I have cleaned it as best I can but these dials can be prone to losing their paint finish if aggressive cleaning methods are employed. It's perfectly useable and clear to read. These dials were produced to allow a hunter movement to be installed in an open face case whilst retaining the correct 12 position under the pendant. Many hunter movements are currently housed in open face cases with their original dials resulting in the 3 being below the pendant, these have become known as side winders.

The hands are blued steel and in good order under a good acrylic crystal.

Overall an unusual watch in very good order.
