18 size Ball Hamilton 999A 21 jewel railroad watch. Super!

18 size Ball Hamilton 999A 21 jewel railroad watch. Super!

An 18 size railroader from Ball Watch Co with a Movement made by Hamilton in 1908, runs strong keeps excellent time. The watch has just been fully serviced and has a new mainspring so is running strong in all positions whilst keeping excellent time.

The Ball watch Co. was founded by Mr. Webb C. Ball to provide railroad grade watches directly to the railroad companies  and their employees. The actual movements were manufactured by the established watch making companies to Ball's design and specification. These movements were then assembled into their cases at the Ball factory and sold under the Ball branding. Companies that made the movements included Hamilton, as here, Illinois, Waltham, Elgin, etc.

This is a full plate 18 size movement grade 999a, 1 of 14000 made in total. It has 21 jewels, Swiss lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallets, gold timing screws, and a micro-regulator.

The watch is stem wind and lever set.

The 3 piece "Silverode" (Nickel alloy) case is in fine condition, with screw on/off front and rear covers. The covers need a delicate touch to remove and replace but do do so easily.

A very nice original dial has a very small chip by the 2 but is in otherwise fine condition. The blued steel hands are in good order and the watch has a mineral glass crystal. The crystal does have a couple of fine scratches right in the centre which are in fact barely noticeable.

Overall a fine collectors piece in lovely condition running well enough to be used daily.
