16s Elgin 21 jewel B W Raymond railroad watch

A late model railroad watch made by Elgin Watch Co. in 1944.
This is a model 15 B W Raymond grade that features Elgin's take on the White metal alloy hairspring that is resistant to changes in temperature and magnetism. Changes in temperature affected the elasticity of previous carbon steel hairsprings and that resulted in wild variations in timekeeping regularity. This was overcome by using bi-metallic split balance wheels and meticulous adjustment which was expensive to produce and time consuming to set up. The new hairsprings overcame these problems and resulted in more reliable timekeeping.
The movement features 21 jewels, a fully capped Swiss lever escapement with double roller, Sapphire pallet stones, Gold timing screws and a "Ball" micro-regulator. Screw set gold jewel settings and a damaskeened polished finish complete the cosmetic appearance of the movement. This watch is running strong in all positions for the full length of the wind and it's keeping very good time within a few seconds per day.
The 20 year gold filled case is in fair condition as there are no dents or dings the main band and the edges of the covers do have some gold loss due to age and normal use. Screw on/off covers with both doing so easily and both closing down square and tight.
Single sunk white enamel dial is also in fair condition with no cracks, chips or hairlines but there is a line of wear to the bottom of the sub seconds dial, please see the photos.
A very good set of heavy spade style hands under a very good acrylic crystal.
Overall a good railroader in nice condition that could easily be used daily.
